Chocolate: The sweeter lane to a healthy body

Just about everyone loves the taste of chocolate. Well the news is out that chocolate can actually benefit the body. Although the dark chocolate is bitterer than the semi-sweet the health benefits of dark chocolate are greater. Along with dark chocolate consuming red wine and green tea also have great health benefits. The main key is moderation, as with any indulgence of passion.

Dark chocolate contains antioxidants. There is a strong belief that antioxidants can reduce your chances of cardiac disease, cancer, and even high blood pressure. In addition these antioxidants improve endothelial cells, your digestive process, and kidney function. Dark chocolate helps fight bad cholesterol (LDL) and improves the circulation of blood from the heart to the brain. Furthermore there is belief that it has similar effects as aspirin does on the body in preventing stroke and heart attack (inhibiting platelet aggregation).

In the chocolate are flavonoids. These flavonoids interact with the natural antioxidation system in the body (the vitamins and enzymes). The flavonoids itself is not the actual benefit it is the reaction inside of the body that is tipped off by the ingestion of these powerful plant derived elements. When there is an imbalance of between the antioxidants and free radicals a level of oxidative stress is place on the body that will cause cellular damage. People suffering from anemia and kidney stones have been treated with flavonoids. Flavonoids that are found in chocolate have been used to help people who suffer from anemia, a poor appetite and kidney stones.

Where Do You Find Flavonoids? Fruits Vegetables (onions, parsley, legumes) Teas Wines (grape skins)

The body uses minerals such as copper and magnesium to maintain a functioning heart and blood pressure. Experts point to the dried extract of roasted cocoa beans as one of the best sources for dark chocolate. If you cannot consume the extract, then eating a 1.6-ounce chocolate bar is the second best option. This should introduce just an ample amount of ingredients to achieve some effect. Be aware however that chocolate is fattening and it contains caffeine so never overdo a good thing. There are several brand s of chocolate available on the market today and each person has to find a suitable taste for him or her. By eating only 2-3 squares of chocolate can be of great benefit to the body.

Eating chocolate is not the only way to keep a heart healthy. There are some specific contents in the chocolate that help. The most beneficial is the dark chocolate because of the flavonoids that it contains. Oddly enough the manufactures of the chocolate destroyed many of the flavonoids in the early days. Since the discovery of the health effects, manufacturers work very hard to maintain 95% of it in the product. Since the taste of dark chocolate is bitterer than semi-sweet, consider buying one with almonds and raisins of one of each. This can add a little flair and variety to the bar.

The symptoms of acid reflux in both adults as well as children are very uncomfortable to say the very least. The affliction is usually associated with the terrible painful burning sensation that affects the alimentary canal. If someone happens to be lying down, the symptoms become aggravated. Acid reflux and a sore throat are very common symptoms of this disease.

Why Acid Reflux And Sore Throats Are Associated?
Amazingly, when people suffer from acid reflux, only a few of them rush to see their doctor for medical advice. These people somehow believe that their problem will disappear on its own. Very few people, unless they are really troubled by acidity will seek but doctors intervention to treat acid reflux. If left untreated, the acidity levels will grow and after some time the food that is in the stomach is thrown up the alimentary canal with some force and the food will reach the mouth. After that, the food is swallowed again or sometimes thrown out of the mouth.

If this process is repeated on a regular basis, then the acid will irritate the throat very badly and a person will experience all the symptoms of acute throat pain. Therefore, the association between acid reflux and sore throats. At this stage the person should immediately visit their doctor and have the proper treatment started. The sad thing is very few people take the acidity of the stomach seriously. Even fewer people associate acid reflux and sore throats in the right perspective. They would rather just take a painkiller and drink some hot tea, thinking that they are suffering from a slight flu, rather than an acute acid reflux.

The Dangers Associated By Letting The Acid Reflux Fester

When the acid reflects and sore throats stage is reached, it is time to take the proper medicines to help neutralize the acid that is rising in the esophagus. As well, making sure that having the proper diet is in place so that it will not aggravate the situation any further. If left untreated for too long, it can literally burn up the inside of the alimentary canal. In fact, it can become so bad that even belching would be painful for those who have esophagus damage in the form of bleeding ulcers.

It will be very difficult to drink or eat, once the ulcers have set in. The use of the alimentary canal (esophagus) will become very painful. You should never allow it to reach this far. Learn to identify the symptoms as early as possible and then get the proper treatment as soon as possible.

Your One Week System To Explosive Personal Growth!

I seem to lost reckoning on how many times I’ve read and heard of show biz marriages degenerating almost left and right. Not that I care (and admittedly I don’t), it seems foolhardy that we see movie and TV stars as flawless people, living the fairytale life of affluence and glamor. I suppose we all have to stop sticking our heads in the clouds and face reality some day.

There are many ways to lose your feeling of self-esteem despite of how trivial it could get. But whatever happens, we should all try not to lose our own sense of self. There are no perfect lives despite the celebrity we see on the tube everyday.

So what does it take to be a cut above the rest? Here are some of the things you can think and improve on that should be adequate for a week worth of thought and practice.
1. Know Your Purpose.

Are you wandering through life with little direction – hoping that you’ll find happiness, health and prosperity? Identify your life purpose or mission statement and you will have your own unique compass that will lead you to your truth north every time. Without knowing the sense of direction you want to go how will you ever plan on getting there?

This may seem tricky at first when you see yourself to be in a tight or even dead end position in life. But there’s always that little loophole to turn things around and you can make a big difference to yourself. You just have to look, just a little, and you will see it.

2. Know Your Values.

What do you value most? Make a list of your top 5 values. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning. As you set your goals for 2008 – test your goals against your priorities. Are they close? If the goal doesn’t align with any of your top five values – you may want to reconsider it or revise it otherwise your life seems to go in two different directions. You aren’t gaining anything if that is the case.

3. Know Your Needs.

Unmet needs can keep you from living authentically. Take care of yourself. Do you have a need to be acknowledged, to be right, to be in control, to be loved? There are tons of folks who live their lives without attaining any of their dreams and most of them end up being stressed or depressed and just plain miserable. You’re not going to let that happen, right? List your top five needs and get them met before it’s too late! You have to get out of the rut.

4. Know Your Passions.

You know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life, don’t you? Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm may hinder you at first, but will not derail your chance to develop into the person you ought to be if you give yourself just half a chance. Begin a plan to develop those things that you are passionate about. Don’t just let them sit on the back burner doing nothing.

5. Live Life From The Inside Out.

Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by frequently reflecting in silence. Does that sound corny? Well, how about this? Commune with nature. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. Do you think it only works for people who want to be monks? For most of us in modern day society it’s hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our own home. What we are on the outside is a direct reflection of what it is we are on the inside. Think about it.

6. Honor Your Strengths.

What are your positive traits? What distinctive talents do you have? Don’t say you don’t have any! You are unique. That’s talent number one. List three – if you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help identify them. People aren’t seeing you from the fishbowl that you see yourself in. They see your talents everyday even if you aren’t aware of them yourself. Are you imaginative, witty, good with your hands, have a sense of humor, can write, etc.? Find ways to Assert your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase your self-confidence when you can share what you know to others.

7. Serve Others.

When you live realistically, you may find that you develop an interconnected feeling of being. When you are true to who you are, living your purpose and giving of your talents to the world around you, you give back in service what you came to share with others -your spirit – your essence, who it is you really are. The bonuses for sharing your gift with those near to you is genuinely rewarding, much more if it were to be the eyes of a stranger who can appreciate what you have done for them.

Self-improvement is indeed one type of work that is worth it. It shouldn’t always be within the confines of an office building, or conceivably in the four corners of your own room. The difference lies inside ourselves and how much we want to change for the better. Try these tips for a week. See for yourself what you can accomplish with just a little desire. You may be surprised who you find at the end of the week!

Eat Beans and Lentils and Savor Good Health!

What good are they? You may not realize the benefits of eating a food that is not very interesting or exciting. There are ways to make boring food exciting. Aside from being boring they should be a part of your healthy diet. They contain an abundance of protein and fiber and are low in fat content. In addition they contain antioxidants and something called phytochemicals. Diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and inflammatory diseases can be prevented or minimized through eating phytochemicals. In particular black beans contain soluble fiber, which is effective in lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL) by up to 24%, in turn can lower your blood pressure. These beans can also keep sugar levels at a healthier level thus blocking the effects of hunger for diabetics. This concept may lead to a reduction or elimination for the need of insulin in the diabetics. Black beans are not the only beans that are chocked full of fiber- so are many other types of beans and peas as well. The most popular kinds of beans and peas include chickpeas (or garbanzo beans), lima beans, fava beans, kidney beans, black-eyed peas, navy beans, pinto beans and great northern beans.
Lentils are rich in many nutrients but are particularly rich when it comes to the B vitamins. Consuming sufficient amounts of B vitamins from food sources such as lentils and other foods can help to prevent heart attacks. Besides B vitamins, lentils are also very rich in protein, fiber and a variety of minerals such as ones that help support the strength of the immune system. Examples of these are copper, zinc and manganese. Iron is another mineral that lentils are rich in.

Miso is not a household food by any means but it is a very healthy one. Miso is a type of soybean paste that is often used as a seasoning for sauces and soups. Miso is rich in substances called isoflavones which are believed to help protect against the development and growth of breast cancer because they inhibit the growth of the blood vessels that are responsible fro the rapid growth of tumors.

Also rich in both iron and calcium (when it is sufficiently processed with the salts of calcium) is soybean curd or tofu. Other soy products that boast high levels of vitaimin A, B6, magnesium and zinc is tempeh. Tempeh has slightly lower levels of fat in it than does tofu. Other soy products that are worth considering because of their nutritional value include soymilk and other soy beverages such as chocolate soymilk, soy nuts, soy yogurt, tofu (as previously mentioned) and a variety of products made from tofu.

All soy products derive from soybeans and this means that they are high in protein content. Protein is made up of all of the essential amino acids that the body needs to function at its healthiest. Soybeans are also extremely rich in all of the B vitamins, as well as fiber, the omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and phosphorus.

Use of Hypnosis to Quit Smoking

Quitting the habit of smoking is not easy. Among the common forms of vice, smoking is perhaps the hardest habit to withdraw from. When a person decides to quit smoking, he must commit to it seriously, for the said vice can reoccur or trigger again.

Millions of people are smoking worldwide, and almost half of these smokers want to quit the habit. To address the increasing need for aids than can help smokers have an easier and faster process of recovering from smoking addiction, numerous quitting programs are developed and established each year. In line with the strengthened anti-smoking programs and treatments to help smokers quit from the said vice, hypnosis is among the types of therapy that can provide significant improvements to smokers’ addiction condition.
Hypnosis therapy to quit smoking

Yes, there are quite plenty of treatments and programs available for those who want to quit smoking. These treatment, however, have certain side-effects, making the process of withdrawal really difficult for smokers. A person undergoing any type of anti-smoking treatment may become moody, restless, and irrational. As such, smokers who do not want to experience the hassles brought by conventional anti-smoking therapies prefer to undergo hypnosis to quit smoking.

Hypnosis as a quit smoking therapy involves two process. One is the hypnosis therapy per se and the other is the self hypnosis. In hypnosis, a smoker needs to look for a hypnotist who is well-experienced in handling similar cases before. After setting an appointment with the hypnotist, one will go through several hypnosis sessions. In session, a person is put into a relaxed, altered state of consciousness, and after which the hypnotist talks to the smoker’s subconscious. Once the person is awake, his mind works or functions like a non-smoker.

Some people are doubtful of hypnosis as a treatment for smoking addiction because of the fear of having their subconscious corrupted by thoughts and things that they do not approved of. But this is not how hypnosis works. This type of psychological treatment works by conditioning the mind and body to work to what one decides or approves to do. Hence, it is important for one to have a firm decision to stay away from the addiction so the hypnosis will produce positive results.

On the other hand, self hypnosis is recommended to those who do not want to consult or undergo therapy sessions with hypnotist. Self hypnosis works, but it needs a lot of work on the part of the smoker. As information guide in self hypnosis, one can use books, online resources, videos, and journals that feature self help scripts and relaxation methods that can help in reconditioning or reprogramming the mind to quit the habit of smoking.

Although self hypnosis works for most people, it may also not give any improvement to some smokers. This type of self-help really requires a lot of determination and perseverance from smokers to avoid habit rebound. If self hypnosis does not seem to work, a smoker then needs to decide if consulting a hypnotist is better than conducting a self help therapy.

A Review of The Idiots Guide to Weight Loss

The fat loss 4 idiots is a fairly new diet plan that claims it can help or rather make you lose 9 pounds in just 11 days. If you are to ask any nutritionist if this diet is worth it, their answer may be no since they would advice you that only 3-4 pounds of loss in 11 days is advisable. So does this diet actually work? Can you shed 9 pounds in 11 days?

Personally I believe this diet to be true. I think this one diet among several that really advertises the truth. Yes you can shed 9 pounds in just 11 days. Why am I so confident about this diet? I myself have done it.

Why does this diet work? How is it different from other diets? This diet is based on the principle of shifting calories. This diet recognizes that our body has an amazing adjusting capacity. Our metabolism adjusts really quickly to the quantity of food we eat and hence speeds up or slows down accordingly. Our body builds a certain tolerance to certain foods and prioritizes what needs to be burned first and what can be burnt slower. Normally calories are first burned before the fat.

Most diets don’t work because they are aware of the fact that calories are burnt before fats and hence advice lower calorie intake. But what they do not realize is that our body is extremely clever. If you reduce your intake of calories even for a month, your body adjusts to it and your metabolism will not reduce too much fat. The fat loss 4 idiots diet is not focused on the calories you consume but works on a special calorie eating system.

This diet encourages you to have not 3 but 4 meals everyday for the 11 days. It does not restrict you from many foods. It encourages you to eat a certain type of food one week and eat a different type of food the next week. It basically aims at tricking our metabolism which indeed is a quick and clever learner. If we eat different types of food every week, our body will not have room to adjust to any type. Thus our metabolism will be high and hence causing the burning of fats. Remember the higher your metabolism, the more fats will be burned. Say for example we eat about 2,500 calories and suddenly switch to 200 calories, our body may still read it as 2500 calories and thus burn fat in the bargain.

If you are overweight or obese, and you want to lose weight, give this diet a try. It is only an 11 day diet. You can also resume the diet after 3 days. And on those 3 days you can eat whatever you care to eat. This diet is fairly easy to follow. It allows you to eat fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates and proteins. Believe you me, this is a very easy diet to follow and what is more, the results actually show at the end of the diet.

Blood Clot Formation

If you ever wanted to know how blood clots, I am going to venture the explanation.Blood clotting is simply to formation of a patch of blood products that create a band aid for the body. The blood can clot by means on internal (INTRINSIC) and external (EXTRINSIC) process.

Internal: is the INTRINSIC pathway of clotting inside of the blood vessel External: also called the EXTRINSIC is outside of the blood vessel; tissue injury

The primary basis for injury is exposure of the collagen that is under the endothelial (basic surface cells) linings of vessels and tissues. Collagen is the major protein in the formation of bone, ligaments, tendons, and teeth. Furthermore it provides a higher tensile strength to blood vessels. The presence of collagen in the skin is what gives it its elasticity: wrinkles come from degradation of the collagen in the skin. The important concept here is not the eye or the skin; it is the vessels in the body.
A blood clot can form from having an infection in the body, slow and turbulent blood flow to a vessel, bacterial endotoxins, formation of atheriosclerotic plaque (pre-existing), or stagnation of blood flow in a heart chamber. Atheriosclerotic plaques can develop from elevated cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, genetic predisposition, trauma, or lack of mobility (exercise is key in helping prevent clot formation).

Clots that form in the arteries, under higher pressures, are composed of platelet clumps that are bound together by fibrin protein strands. Clots in veins, under lower pressures are composed predominantly of red blood cells with fewer platelets, and contain a large amount of fibrin strands that are intertwined.

As the injured area is exposed circulating platelets begin to clump together (aggregate) at the site of injury. These platelets then release what we can simplify as transmitters to summon more platelets. The unique event is that the platelets change their shape and structure to expose a special layer of PHOPHOLIPIDS. This exposure assists these proteins that require that particular surface. These proteins (coagulation factors) cascade together to form a mesh called FIBRIN (which holds platelets together in a clot)

As this cascade continues it becomes very complex in regards to combinations of the other proteins involved.

When a clot forms it is called a thrombus (an example is the Deep Vein Thrombosis; DVT). If this thrombus becomes dislodged and it flows through circulation it is now referred to as an embolism (and example is the Embolic Stroke). These clots once lodged inside of a vessel will cause a slowing of blood flow or an obstruction of blood flow. If blood is diminished then there is a lack of nutrient exchange. If the clot blocks blood flow completely death of cells and tissues is most likely to occur. If cells tissues begin to die, the organ that they are associated with will not function properly.

The manner in which blood blots form will dictate the preventative measures. Blood clots can form as a result of high levels of cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, surgery, trauma, autoimmune disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, pregnancy, and birth control pills. The list is probably endless, but prevention is paramount (aside from the unexpected)

Tips to reduce your chances of developing blood clots: Increasing mobility (improving circulation) Use of anti-clotting socks (like on long car and airplane rides) Stretching Improved diet with low fat and low cholesterol (aside from genetic disorders) Anti-Platelet drugs (another post will cover these) Electrocardiograms on a scheduled basis (monitor for arrhythmias) Exercise soon after surgery to mobilize blood flow Quitting smoking (no brainer)
